I have a win xp pro machine that cannot connect to my lan or internet. I have diagnosed it to the point of finding out that dhcp service is missing the "AFD" service. One of the messages I get is "The ____ service depends on the following nonexistent service: Afd", where "_____" is the following:

NLA
TrueVector (Zonelabs)
TCP/IP
and a few more but i don't think it matters.

Any ideas??? Much appreicated!!

doublexpressions,

I would try checking the status of your services with the admin tools, clear you event log to easily track the effect of alterations.

By Default Administrative Tools is not shown. You will have to enable it by opening Taskbar and Start Menu. Taskbar and Start Menu is accessible on the Classic Start Menu by clicking on Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu. On the XP Start Menu you will have to get into the Control Panel and the Taskbar and Start Menu applet. Put a checkmark beside, "Display Administrative Tools. Click OK and then click on your Start, Programs, Administrative Tools and Services.

The event log is how I got that info...I will check out those links tonight.

Registry is missing entry, there is also no service in devman for AFD....I am guessing that is the problem!!!

How do I go about adding this back into the registry? I definitely have never done much with it, so be specific!!

THANK YOU!!

This what I have in my Registry for AFD in Services, you can compare yours with it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD]

"Description"="AFD Networking Support Environment"

It mentions a file called "afd.sys", do you have that file?

If not you could try running the System File checker by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

ZoneAlarm has also on occasions can cause problems and also IIS, or a combination of the two.

I have the file afd.sys in my \windows\system32\dllcache\ and windows\system32\drivers\ folders, should there be two copies?

I do not have a listing under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ for afd. How can I fix this? Do I use regedit or a text editor? Please walk me through this I am a complete newbie to changing the registry!!

I ran sfc/scannow and it did not give me any errors.

Your decision if you want to match what I have in my XP Pro registry? I suppose it is hardly likely to make things worse?

Copy the passage from and including "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" to " "NextInstance"=dword:00000001 ".

Paste it into Notepad, save it as anyname.reg , do not save it as a .txt file. If you save it as a .reg file you will be able to right-click on it and select "merge" which will insert it into registry.

System32 has a backup copy of its' files in the DllCache folder, that is normal and not a problem.

If you are going to play with your Registry have a look at this free backup program.

That's great info....thanx...I went to an old backup (about a month ago) and imported it instead. That was the problem....after I rebooted it was fine. I guess I'll never know why it was missing!?

Thanx!!
