How do I delete the icons in the program tray in the lower right-hand corner of my Windows screen? I'm using XP Pro.

WHY would you want to delete them?? THOSE are running processes.

IF you do not want them displayed, then you will have to go into each process/program and see if you can check a box, whatever to NOT display the icon in the taskbar. Things like the audio speaker, and network connection can be set to not display.

Icons in the notification area are always associated with programs or devices.

In some cases you can right click remove them..
In other cases you may have to right click and enter the properties to see how to get the icon to go away...
another option is to uninstall the software associated with the icons.

Other icons like the speaker can be disabled through the control pannel (sound options)..

Long story short.. it depends on the program...

Thanks, Auger, as you said, I found ways to select a preference that certain icons not appear in the tray. To answer PRPhx, there were some programs I don't use and they were just clutter. Example, "TruSynch", which is part of my much-beloved Sidekick PM, but since I never use the former program, I wanted its icon out of the tray.

right click on start and choose properties
click task bar
check "hide inactive icons" and click customize
all the items for "systray" (you call it program tary)
will show up in "current list"
when you click on an item, a drop down list will show
click "always hide"
repeat for any items that you don't want to show in systray
click ok
click apply
your systray will not show.

Thanks, alidabiri! That was exactly the feature in XP Pro I wanted to learn about.
