Advanced Open File Option - what do I need to use it?

Hi there,
I know this is a dum question but I'm really getting lost in the veritas web site trying to find out what software and licenses I need to be able to use the Advanced Open file Option on my system. I have one media server that's running BE 9.1 and I have that backing up several windows servers and loads of windows workstations.

It looks like they sell the option pack for the media server and that comes with A client access license. Does this mean I only have to buy that one item to be able to use it all over? Or do I have to buy licenses for all over like I do with the remote agent? Also if I go buy AOFO licenses this will make my remote agents ones redundent won't it?

Could someone please offer me some help and advice on this.

AOFO will not make your Remote Agent redundant. They do two different things.

Remote Agent allows BE to access and backup files on a server that is not the backup server. Remote Agent will not allow you to backup files that are in use (open).

AOFO allows BE to access and backup files that are being used (open) at the time they are being backed up. AOFO will not allow you to access and backup files on a server other than the backup server.

As for the software....depends on how you bought the Backup Exec software. I get mine from DELL and it has all the agents/options on it, but I need the license for the agents/options to be installed and usable.

Don't quote me on this part, but I believe you only need one license for AOFO. Why? Remote Agent is installed on EACH 'remote' server. AOFO is only installed on the backup server.

Again, I don't use AOFO myself, so I'm not positive on the last part. I'm sure someone who does use AOFO will let us know if I'm correct or not.

AOFO agent includes one hidded remote call. Veritas assumes you will be backing up a remote server with this. So if you have one remote server that you need to use AOFO on you need core license and AOFO license. On the tech side you with just the one license you could backup as many machines as you want. BE doesnt know if you have 1 or 50 remote machines. Long as you have the remote agent license installed.

Thanks for your replys. My issue is the licensing not the software - I think I can tell my manager we only need one on the backup server and see how we get on from there.
