Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP

Is anyone else having issues with this new Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP that microsoft has put out?

I've got some machines (I have no idea their brand, etc because I am tech support for all different Windows boxes that users bring in and connect to our peer to peer network using DHCP on a router with a frame relay connection) that are not able to connect to the network. Their IP address is 169.254.?.?. Some of these are brand new machines.

One of the common pieces is the Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP. I've tried configuring it (to the best of my limited knowledge), but that didn't work. So, I followed MS instructions on removing it and it still didn't work. I guess this pack support IPv6 which is a new technology.

I could reboot my router to make sure that the DHCP hasn't gone belly up, but I would think that my other machines that are connected would begin showing signs of network failure as well.

Any thoughts or suggestions on my problem would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm being very vague, but I don't know how else to explain it.

Hello

The 169.215.x.x IP address range is used for autoconfigure when the PC can't get an address from a DHCP server, I would check the router that its DHCP table isn't full up and also that the cables from the PC to the router are good, by plugging a known working PC into the ethernet point with a known good cable.

I already booted my router and had another pc connect to the jack with the same cable and they work just fine.

I believe that it is communication between the OS and the NIC. The NIC(s) appears to be loaded and working properly (did ping 127.0.0.1, reinstalled the NIC, etc), but that didn't fix the problem either. I've even gone so far as to try a static IP address with SM, GW, and DNS settings, but nothing seems to get it working.

It's a brand new Dell so the owner is arguing that Dell says its my network and I'm arguing that it's the machine. We've even taken this "Dell" to a known working jack and it still doesn't work.

Any other ideas PLEASE?! :-D

I haven't done the Winsock fix on this particular machine yet, maybe I should?
 
Have you tried an

IPCONFIG /RELEASE

then

IPCONFIG /RENEW

from the command prompt?

This should tell the NIC to release whatever IP it holds, if any, and get a new address from the DHCP server. Also does the icon in the system tray show it as disconnected or connected?

If all else fails you can try rebinding the adaptor.
If that still fails delete it and reinstall it while you have it plugged into a know good port.

Will try release and renew, but I believe another one of my techs have tried that. It shows connected in the toolbar and if you physically unplug the cable is shows up as disconnected so physically I think we're definitely working at the physical network layer.

Will let you both know on the other steps.
 
Oh man [neutral]!! You will never guess what was wrong with at least two of my machines that were having the issue.

Apparently asking the users if they have their network cable connected is not enough. You have to describe the freaking cable to them so that they don't connected the laptop MODEM cable to their NIC and RJ45 Wall jack!!!

I had this one person go and grab a cable from a person who's machine was working on the network (assuming that she would actually do this) oh no.... she went and grabbed the cable of the other person that wasn't working (also using their MODEM cable!!).

I just love phone support!! [2thumbsup] I still have one more machine and I promise that this one is using a CAT 5 cable!! This person's laptop had the NIC go bad about 3 weeks ago and so he took it to a shop and had the NIC replaced and they tested at the shop and it worked fine. So he comes back to the office and it works fine for a few days and then it quits working. The only two things that he thinks may have signifigantly affected his computer is that he did a Norton Corporate Edition Live Update and he did his Microsoft Windows Update and after that is when his machine quit working.

Any suggestions for this poor guy? [ponder]

No suggestions really, unless you run training on setting up PCs and can show them the difference between modem and ethernet sockets.
Glad its working and it wasn't the network.
