I'm using a NAT ADSL router and I'm trying to open some ports up for online gaming etc. - I understand I want to configure port forwarding/redirection.

Can anyone explain this a bit- I need to specifiy a port to open which is fine, but then I need to specifiy a local IP address which receives the request- is this the IP of my router?

Ok -
First you need to know the local ip address - if you are using XP then go to network settings and highlight the LAN connection - if you look on the info screen on the left it should tell you the local IP - normally a router will use the same one for the same computer - but sometimes it will change so you have to keep an eye on this - especially if when you have done it - and it works for a while but then stops the problem will be that the local IP changed.
Now you have to log-on to the site that you configure the router from - typically 192.168.1.1 - under the port settings enable forwarding - then find the bit where you can set the port details (my router is in Japanese so I can't be more specific about what these places are called as I don't read Japanese very well - but this is all fairly standard) Here you set the incoming port (to the router) the IP address of your computer (private LAN IP) and the incoming port of your computer (the same as the incoming port of the router. This tells the router to send incoming port requests on a given port to the same port on your local computer - reboot the router to let the settings take effect - and it should work!
I hope this helps,
