ADSL Internet Connection Issue

I have tried everyting "i think", i have two computer i have been working on and can't figure out what is going on. if i reboot the machine the interent works for about 10 minutes, if dont' touch the maching for 10 minutes i come back and the net doesn't work. after that the internet will not get back on line. they are both xp pro, i have ran the follwing:

adaware se 6.0
hijacthis
AVG
zonealarm
i have shut down zonealarm and it still won't get on the net.

any help would be great.

Try disabling the power managment settings of the network card in Device Manager.

Is the router set to disconnect after x minutes? On some modems, you an set it to 0 for unlimited, while on others, you have to type the maximum in the range (999) which gives you unlimited.

I have mine set to 0, and it never goes down, well make that usually never goes down. I've gotten signals crossed when the weather was bad with a nearby WIFI signal.

i am still having the problem, i changed the power management to always on and set the power for the nic to never let the computer go off? i am speechless i have two people with the same exact problem and i can't get either of their computers to work????? i have surfed the net and can't find anything. i looked in the configureation of the router, which is provided by alltel (it's a speedstream 5200), and can't find anywhere you can set the "Range" any help is greatly appreciated.

The Range is on the same "page" of the 5200 as the ISP password for the PPPOE, also there is a box for auto connect on disconect.

What are the router l.e.d's telling you? Is ADSL sync staying up when you appear to "lose connection"? Not familiar with your router, but can you check line stats, i.e. ATTN and SNR. Do these remain constant during loss of connection?

Heres a few things I would ask when troubleshooting this problem...

1. Once youre on does it stay on the entire time you are on the pc? If so, are one of the other 2 PC's still working?

2. What IP's are assigned to your PC when its working and after it stops working? IPCONFIG/ALL will tell you this.

3. Once you leave the PC for 20 minutes (or however long it takes) when u get bac, can you ping your gateway IP? ipconfig/all would tell you

4. Which ISP are you with?

Im thinking that maybe theres an IP conflict somehwere but if there was you would get a popup on the conflicting machine telling you that. Anyhow, these questions would be a good start.

I am not familiar with your modem, but make sure there is no 'disconnect after idle for x' (or something similar). I saw this once on a Motorolla modem which caused an identical problem to yours.

The next thing I'd try is another ADSL modem, or try a Linux machine and see if the fault is replicated, however it still sounds like a hardware issue to me.

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but do you have ADSL inline filters installed on all your telephones? This could be a line noise / interference problem.

I had a W2K Server that kept trying to reclaim the 192.168.0.1 address, which messed up the other computer on the net that was running Intenet Connection Sharing. I forget what the solution was, but it was in the Network Properties.

What systems do you have running?

SOLVED!!! Well i don't know that i exactly solved it but i figured out a work around. Lucky for me i work in the same city as the internet provider and when i had to configure my router at work i needed the dns ip address preferred #1 and #2. Knowing that i changed the ip on my pc from dhcp to static and so far so so good. i looked all over the router and couldn't find a timeout function i was even sure to keep the computer "Un" able to shut off power to the device to conserve power but that didn't work either. i also assigned the nic a secondary ip or alternate ip to ensure that if for some reason the router doesn't like the 192.168.254.2 it will use the 192.168.254.253. Thank al of you for your answers and input.
