Adobe Illustrator close button gone

Have you tried to close - using the apple + q keyboard shortcut. Then Restart the app, does the close button come back?
What version of Illustrator? You can trash the prefs for Illustrator and then reopen the app and it should be fixed.
I would first try quitting/force quitting the app and restarting your computer.

My guess is you've changed screen mode in Illustrator.
Look at your tool pallete. At the bottom there is a button that lets you toggle the screen mode.
I think the key for it is "F". Try pressing it and you should cycle through 4 different modes.
