Hi-
setting up some computer for some teachers, XP Pro default Compaq install plus all updates. I put a computer in a teacher's room that was still the administrator account with no password. She hooked it up herself and started making files. Since I don't want teachers to have admin rights, I went in and:
-Assigned a password to Administrator.
-Created an user for myself called Admin (I hate having to type out Administrator) with same password as Administrator.
-Created a limited user account for the teacher with password.
-Transferred all her files (I thought) to shared folders.
-Logged out of Administrator and into Teacher's user, moved all her files from shared into her Documents and Desktop.
----
Turns out I somehow missed a folder on her Desktop, still findable with Search as being on Documents and Settings/Administrator/Desktop but not accessible from the teacher's account nor the Admin account. I tried starting in Safe Mode and logging in as Administrator, but now the password I set does not work. I tried to copy the directory in a DOS window, but I did not have permission, even logged in as Admin.

It suddenly dawned on me that Windows might be funny about having an account called Admin. Is this known that calling an account that makes the Administrator password not work?

Is there a simple fix to this, or am I doomed to have to try to reset the password? Note: I opted NOT to encrypt my files when I set up the Administrator password.

Any help, much appreciated.

Calling the account Admin should have no consequences that are detrimental to XP, I wonder if you just forgot the exact password for Administrator?

As long as the Administrator account has no encrypted files you can use your Admin account to reset the Administrator password.

If a user with a computer administrator account changes the password for another user, that user will lose all EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates, and stored passwords for Web sites or network resources.

Thanks-- I got it done. I restarted in safe mode and logged in Admin and found Administrator in the Users and Groups and changed the password. I must have typed it wrong (twice) when I set it, but I am quite a good typist, so that's hard for me to believe!

In any case, I got the missing folder for the teacher. Thanks again!

the thing about us good typists, is we tend to type with correct punctuation and capitilization, I have finally trained myself to leave the SHIFT button alone while typing because when I would hold down the shift for caps my finger always hit the CAP LOCK button and I would wonder why my passwords or user names were not working. My soultion was going to be try all caps for password, but you already fixed it, now when you forget your admin password holler at me and I'll tell you how to erase the password without having to enter a new one take care
