I have a NT 4.0 PDC with Exchange Server 5.5. I am installing a new Win2K server on the network as my primary server replacing a NetWare 3.x server. I want the Win2K machine to be the Domain Controler , and have the existing NT box just run the Exchange Server. What would be a good approach for acheiving this? Also, do I need to change the type of domain controller that the current NT server is?

You should install the NT on the hardware you want to use for the W2K server, and install it as a BDC in your existing domain. Promote the new server to be the PDC, then upgrade it to W2K. This will upgrade your domain from an NT domain to an Active Directory domain. Your old NT server will be a BDC.

If you don't want to install NT on your W2K hardware first, you will have to bring a third system into the mix, install NT on it (in BDC role), promote it, then upgrade it to W2k. Then run dcpromo on the new W2K server you mentioned above and make it a Domain controller. Migrate the FSMO roles from the stand-in to the most recent DC, and then run dcpromo on your stand-in to remove the DC role from it and then take it off the network.

And don't forget to mix DNS up in this.

Thank you for the fast & informative reply. One other question regarding the Exchange server. If I go the route of your first suggesting by loading NT as a BDC, upgrade to PDC then Win2K.... will users be okay authenticating to the Win2K server and getting access to the Exchange server?

What kind of clients to you have, do you have a routed network, and do you have WINS and/or DNS set up?

Clients are mostly Windows 98SE, but some are Win2K pro. WINS is not set up, and there is no DNS running on the internal servers.

Yes, the users will do fine. The server name in their mail client won't have changed. Once you get the W2K server up and have an internal DNS squared away, you should probably load WINS on it, since it will help the clients find appropriate domain controllers, especially if your network is more than a single subnet.

I do believe there may be an AD add-on for the Win98SE systems that will enhance their ability to work in an AD network.
