Adding Server 2003 R2 to an existing domain 2

I would like to know what steps are needed in order to get R2 in an existing domain that includes Server 2000 and Server 2003 running Exchange 03/SP2. Do I need to run forestprep and domainprep on both the Server 2000 and Server 2003? What must I do to get R2 ready for the Exchange schema updates. I have found bits and pieces of information on this subject, but am really unclear as to how to accomplish this task. Thanks in advance for all the help!

I don't have much experience with Exchange, but I can answer the forestprep question. If you have already joined a 2003 AD server to the domain (you've already run forestprep/domainprep), then, no, you will not need to run it again.

Thanks for the quick reply. It seems that I read somewhere that R2 has to make schema updates to Active Directory. Since R2 is on a new server and I'm not removing or upgrading the existing servers that are Server 2000 and Server 2003 w/Exchange 03. I figured that I would have to run something, so that the existing Server 2000 and Server 2003 machines would receive those schema changes. Otherwise how would the Server 2000 and 2003 machines realize the new schema updates in R2. Maybe I've misunderstood this whole process which is very likely.

You must extend the schema using ADPREP from the SECOND R2 CD - NOT THE FIRST. This must be run on the existing holder of the Schema Master FSMO role, using an account that's a member of the schema admins group.

You can find which server holds the FSMO roles by dropping to a CMD prompt and typing
NETDOM QUERY FSMO

Thank you both for helping. Reading both of your responses here is where I'm at. I ran a NETDOM QUERY FSMO and here are the results:


Schema owner Server 2000

Domain role owner Server 2000

PDC role Server 2000

RID pool manager Server 2000

Infrastructure owner Server 2003 (Not R2)

I obviously changed the server names to reflect the Server version.

I also checked the Schema Version key that was outlined in the Microsoft KB article. It shows that both the existing Server 2000 and 2003 machines have a value of 30=Original release version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). So with the given information should I run adprep /forestprep on both the Server 2000 and Server 2003 (non R2) in order to bring schema version up to 31 (31=Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2). I'm really sorry for making this so difficult, but I do appreciate the help. Also, 58sniper are you aware if I need to run forestprep from the Exchange 03 CD on the new R2 server in order to add schema changes or do those changes automatically get replicated once I get the R2 Server joined to the existing domain. Thanks again!

I recommend running adprep/forestprep on both servers for the AD schema changes that will take place.

I'll let Pat talk more about the exchange, since I'd probably fall on my face (haven't played with Exchange 2003 yet).

Nope - only run it on the schema master ("server 2000"), and it will update the schema to version 31. You have to run it from the Windows Server 2003 R2 CD #2.

If you have multiple DCs, wait for replication to take place. No reboots needed, and it' doesn't really impact performance while you're doing it.

Once that's done, you're all set. I'm assuming the version of Exchange isn't changing (based on the original post).

OK, I ran adprep /forestprep from the R2 #2 CD. It ran fine without any errors. I took from Pat's last post that if I ran it on the schema master that the other domain controller (Windows Server 2003 non-R2) would include those schema changes and bring it up to level 31. I have waited a couple of hours to let is replicate and nothing. The Server 2003 still shows that it is at level 30. Do I have a problem? Maybe, I miss understood something. Please enlighten me. Also, can someone please explain the difference between forestprep and domainprep. Could I have possibly needed to run domainprep? I thought that forestprep would take care of all domain controllers.

forest prep prepares the AD forest, where domainprep only touches the domain it's run on. For any schema changes, it typically is done at the forest level, and the domain level. If you have multiple domains in your forest, you would only run it on the domains where the changes would apply.

You can only run those commands on the schema mater. Period. If you're not seeing the changes at another DC, there are different issues to deal with.
