I'm building a website and I've been asked to use a particular font. I have installed it but I read somewhere that if you use a non- standard font it cannot be viewed by people accessing the web site - is this correct?

The font I want to use is Quay Sans.

Thanks

Basic info for font embedding is here faq215-4042

If it is just for a logo or title you may do better to construct the element as in image. Be aware that most fonts are copyrighted and not free to publish without paying license fees.

The problem arises when a user visiting the page does not have the particular font used in the page, installed in their machine.

The Browser will then select a different font to use, and this may cause problems with the page.

I'm not sure if embedding is what you want, but it might work.

You can also choose the use a commonly available font like Courier or Arial to avoid problems.
If you really must use a particular font, you might try to have a "install this font for better viewing of the page" notice, where you direct users to install the font.

Or you can use a series of fonts in your declarations that way if a user does not have the particular font installed it can use another one from the list specified.

Of course if this is for a single location within the page , like a logo or header, you might find that using an image as john suggests is the easier option.

Many thanks for your information. I have purchased a certificate to use the font but I think I'm convinced it's a bad idea!

Thanks

But your users still need to have the font installed for it to appear in their browsers. So you would need a certificate that allows an unlimited number of users to download and install said font.
