Please HELP!!!

I am trying to add the same network printer that is already there. I want to do this and change the properties on the one printer to be manual feed. So both printers will point to the same printer just have different printing properties.

I did this all the time in Windows 98 but XP doesn't let me create a printer that has already been added.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

Thanks in advance!!

It might work if the printer is attached to a computer and then shared on the network by installing it new with a different name [e.g. my Optra R became Optra R 2] and then sharing the new printer.

These are printers on a Novell Network.

This was something that was so simple to do in 98 and seems to be hard to do in XP.

Unfortunately I can't connect these network printers to the local machines.

In Win98SE I was able to have multiple copies of the same printer, each one had different settings for different jobs, all used the single installed HP Deskjet 930c printer.

I have followed Bcastner's link but cannot get the settings to stick, they revert partially to the default printer settings. This is for a stand alone computer.

I have tried this with the Windows and HP drivers. I must be missing something somewhere, it was so simple in Win98.

What you are allowed to do is completely up to the printer driver offered by the manufacturer.

In the instance of the HP, right-click your newly defined printer, Properties. First click on the Device Settings tab and define a different paper size under the forms to tray setting options and apply.

Now click the General Tab. You should see options for the paper types available. Click Printer Preferences, and set the orientation, and most imporantly the mapping between the tray/manual feed and the paper type. Apply.

Click Advanced at the bottom. Change other options.

These "stick" on my testing.

Best wishes,

Thank you for your reply.

I have checked my settings again, when I set the printer properties in the printer and fax folder the settings stick OK, but when I select a printer from within an application, the paper type and quality are as set, however, other settings such as paper size are as the default printer which did'nt happen in Win98.

I have tried this with the HP drivers and the Win XP drivers with the same results.

A consideration?

Perhaps the settings you want are located in the Registry somewhere. If you can find them there and set them up and save them for each different configuration and delete/merge each before printing.

When I do this with networked printers, I choose "add a local printer attached to this computer," and then I choose "Create a new port" and choose "TCP/IP Port." Then I enter the printer's IP address. It locates the printer and prompts for a driver if it needs it. Once the printer is created, I can change the settings to whatever they need to be. Then I just do the same thing for the next instance of the printer.

Thank you all for your advice.
I have devised a solution that is adequate for my needs. I have created three printers each one set to a partcular task and placed three shortcuts on the desktop. When I need a printer for a partcular task I set it via the shortcut as the default printer which then ensures that the printer settings are correct. I would prefer to select the printer from within the application, but I have found that the default printer controls the paper size despite which ever printer is selected from the drop down list in the print dialog.
