Adding more than two HDs

You should be using SCSI for 6 HDDs.
However, you can put 2 drives on each IDE channel then buy a PCI HDD Controller card which will allow you to connect 2 more.
Be warned, you'll probably need to beef up your power supply and add more fans.

Works fine. Problem comes with cable length. So you will want it sitting next to the main box and as short a cable as possible.
You will probably need to make your own. Or cut holes in adjacent covers for a straight thru shot.

If you really want a safe and secure and fast way of storing data and do not want to slow down your working machines you will eventually have to do what I did. 1.Get yourself a slow machine, a P-II or P-III 300 or an AMD 600 0r even a -shudder- celeron based unit. No Monitor no sound no nothing, just a video card to hook up one of your monitors to load the OS and check up on it once in a while. Install a Raid card controller to manage the 4 or more- 80 plus gig drives with disk mirroring for protection. Install w2K advance server ($2,500.00) . It does a fantastic job of Mirroring Raid drives, it defrags while you sleep every 5 days, it never goes down if installed on a UPS, and you never loose your data. I have saved clients a couple of times with the Novell Netware version of this type of setup. You can use 100 Gig drives or bigger if you like. When working on images you just transfer them to your local machine from your network. Then you just send it back into storage when your done. I am running a P-III Dell Laptop with 900 Mgz and one with 600 Mgz, and a lot of ram on a 100 Megabit per second LAN. And I can not tell the difference within the two. Both machines are heavily loaded with PGs and both do fine, the secret is to keep the machine as clean as possible and with a fast and medium size drive for your PGs. 40 gig should do just fine. 7200 RPM minimum access rate, and preferably a fast scsi drive, like a Cheetah. This makes the machine a bullet. I can not do it on my laptops, but I have one on my server. P-II 300 with 526 ram a a scsi drive. Beats the heck out of my faster machines.
