Hi guys,

Adding a windows xp machine to a domain.

As soon as the user logs on to the domain for the first time it creates a new folder in documents and settings and all of the previous files and settings are gone/within another user folder.

scenario 1: My boss is currently using a local admin account on her xp machine. She has all of her outlook accounts, favorites, contact lists etc.. nicely setup and is not part of the domain. Once I add her to the domain it will create a new folder for her, losing all of her outlook, contacts, and app data settings!

Is there an easy way to keep all of the settings that the local computer user is currently using?

Thanks if you can help.

Hi there,

Thanks for the info.

It seems ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool), when I just tried it, does not like sending from Workgroup to Domain which is really what I need to do.

I.e. Computer "Debbie" on Workgroup IWS >> Domain ICT

Is it possible I ask myself or am I forced to re-setup everyone I add to the domain. :(

Ah well the research continues.

Thanks again

Log her on with the domain account then login with the local admin account (or another with admin rights) |Right click my computer | properties | advanced | user profiles section click the "settings" button | highlight the user you want to copy | click "copy to" | browse to the user folder created for the domain account and copy.

Everything will be copied over. Verify, and then it's safe to delete the old local account folder.

Hi wdoellefeld,

I too was looking for a way to preserve the local user profile after adding the PC to the domain. I tried the method you suggested but I found that it only copied the folders and files of the local profile but not the settings. The most important thing to the user are their e-mail profile & settings, which were NOT copied.

Any other suggestions? research continues indeed ....
