Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a server and client PC for the very first time. I have installed a clean copy of Server 2003 on the server and have made it the domain controller with active directory. The client pc is XP Pro. I have a domain name which i have entered into the client PC and it won't accept it saying the domain could not be contacted. The domain controller is also running as DNS but it still won't work. I am also logged in as administrator on both machines.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Chris

Is the XP client looking to your server for DNS?

I haven't done or touched anything on the XP Pro PC. Just trying to add it to the domain. Its a brand new install.

Do i need to tap in a DNS location on the TCP/IP setting on the NIC? If so how would i find the DNS address?

The DNS address will be the IP address of your domain controller, your XP client will need to know this to find the directory service.

success!! thanks very much. have to try it with a dhcp server now. any tips or advice?

many thanks again!

When you setup DHCP you will need to configure scope options 003 Router address, 006 DNS server address, 015 DNS domain name. Some might be configured automatically when you install the service.

You will also need to configure DNS forwarders so your clients can get on the internet.

It seems to be taking a long time for the domain list to be created. any ideas?

Sorry where do you mean? In Active Directory?

sorry, i mean on the client PC when logging in. I hit the Log On To: drop down menu to select the domain and it takes about 5 minutes+ although i can just hit alt ctrl del and it stops.

Do you now have all of the IP setting correct on the client?

Run ipconfig /all at the command prompt to check, also run ipconfig /flushdns to clear and bad records (on the client PC).

I would also follow the MS link i posted above to make sure your DNS is configured.

Hi, i see seem to have fixed this problem by removing and re-inserting the computer on the domain.

Going to have a go at DHCP now.

Thanks for your help and advice

Yes i've seen that happen before and solved it by removing and re adding myself.

Have just installed DHCP on my server which seems to work fine as i have
connected a PC to my domain which uses a DHCP IP address. Only problem i have
is that i can't view the PC in the DHCP - address leases tool.

any ideas why this is?

Err no if it's picked up an address from that DHCP server then it should show in the console, is it the only DHCP server on the subnet.

If you run ipconfig /all on the station it will tell you which DHCP server it leased the address from. I would also wait a min and refresh the DHCP console.

found the problem. there is a BT router on our network issuing IP address's also so that was why it was working but not showing in the address lease table. Now i have to start again but this time disconnect the router from the network.

You could just stop the DHCP service on the router while you test.
