I'm having a difficult time figuring out exactly how to add an entry for my local ftp server in my DNS server. From my LAN I can access my ftp site by IP (ftp://<ip address>), however I can't access it through ftp.companyname.com.

In your DNS server add a host (A record) for name FTP with the IP address of your FTP server.

You will then have host name FTP.companyname.com which DNS will resolve to the IP address of the FTP server.
