Hi.

My son has just given me a netgear WGT624
wireless firewall router. The wireless part
doesn't work ( one of the reasons he gave it to
me).

I have an existing Siemens 4200 Speedstream modem/router
connecting via USB to ADSL broadband on a Pc running
Win XP Pro.

I also have an old P2 clunker running win98.

The two Pcs are networked with crossover ethernet
& network cards. The network isn't running for
some reason, despite each pc being able to ping each
other's absolute IP address ( 192.168.0.x), i think [ the reason may be]
maybe dns name resolution. - although that is a separate issue &
i think the solution will be different if i can get the wireless router
working.

My son suggests reconfiguring as follows:

phone ---> filters --->
socket etc

(cont'd)
speedstream 4200 -(ethernet)-> netgear -ethernet--> Xp Pro PC
modem/router patch firewall patch
router
|
|
ethernet
patch
|
v

Win98 PC.

To get the setup for the
speedstream 4200 i need to point to 10.1.1.1

To get the setup for the
netgear router need to point to 192.168.0.1
[ oops this was the TCP/IP adress
for the Xp Pc. ]

I propose to
1. uninstall existing Adsl connection (optusnet - my ISP),
configured with USB connector to pc <---> cable ---> 4200 modem.
2. re install adsl connection specifying ethernet connection as above.

My ISP uses dynamic rather than static naming.
I'll have a look at the kerio 2.1.5 firewall to see if i
can get a feel for the ranges i have 'accepted'.

3. I think i need to set the modem speedstream 4200 to point to 10.1.1.1
poe etc.
then set acceptible ranges somehow to 192.168.0.x 255.255.255.

4. then tcp /ip xp pc to 192.168.0.100 say
win 98 pc to 192.168.0.104 say

Anyone got any comments ( before i try this & prolly bugger up something).
if i do then i assume i just revert to the original set-up.

connect the adsl modem 2 the wan-port of the netgear router, it has a 4-port ethernet switch included, so u can connect up 2 4 pc´s without any hassle. let the netgear get a dynamic ip from adsl modem.

ta lemon13 for the response.

i'll give that a try.

In the longer term, i do want to be a little
secure in my own lan & i/net generally.

regards

Ian C

oops all.

tried setting up as discussed.
Son - adam - came over, had a play with the wireless router
& determined the router itself was 'cactus' - ie not just the
wireless bit.

thanks again for all the help ( & discussions)...
eventually i'll get to learn some of this < grin>

Ian C

thanks for the tips linney.

incidentally my network is broke again.

i'm working thru the steps to try to get it working again.

i've got network connection icons showing again ( they weren't).

i've run the winsock fix on the xp machine,
given both computers a new workgroup name.
the pc's can ping each other.

At the moment the win98 pc comes up with
"Network Neighbourhood
\\Xpathlon is not accessible
no permission to access resource."

I log into a user on win98 ( Ian486 ) - no p/w
A user ian486 exists on the Xp machine - again (no p/w).

i've done ipconfig /all on both pcs.
from memory neither WINS or DNS is enabled on the Xp pc.

Are there any obvious suggestions given the above, or is it
just a matter of going through the diagnostic routines, etc

more details on the configuration were provided in another thread - something like
( ian cowan - 2nd computer on network broken by broadband DSL

i'll have to post this to find the thread #s etc

thread779-1198020

When getting 98 and XP to talk to each other, some of the more common problems involve not enabling the Guest account on XP and not setting it to use Simple File Sharing. Firewalls and Anti Virus hidden firewalling components can jam things too. NetBios should be enabled. Blank Passwords may be a problem, using the same username and same non-blank Password may be the way to go.

Running XP in "Safe Mode with Networking" is a handy testing tool too.

ta again linney for your support.

i'm pretty sure i disabled [or removed or wotever ] the guest
account [ at the time i thought was appropriate for security ] - in case someone pinches my pc,etc.

i think simple file sharing is enabled on one directory /sub-directory structure on the Xp machine. C:\oldpc.

I use kerio 2.1.5 [ the last free firewall without popups ] but turn it off to use the local network.

I use AVG free 7.5. I don't know if there are any networking/firewall components but i'll have a poke around.

Not sure whether Netbios is enabled. there is an option
enable netbios over netbeui? or something. I'll try TCP/IP properties. Does this only refer to the XP machine?

I'll certainly try non-blank passwords
& safe mode with networking.

ta again for suggestions

Ian C

Simple file sharing is a XP setting which applies to the whole machine and not just one folder. Have a look at Folder Options/ View/ the last listed entry should refer to this setting, you either enable or disable it there via a check box.

AVG is purely an Anti Virus program and does not contain any hidden firewalling components.

Disabling Kerio may not be enough to prevent any settings remaining in the Registry, sometimes you must actually uninstall it while you test in a firewall free configuration. Conversely you can make doubly sure that any local network access is being allowed by the Kerio firewall.

Netbios is found under the Advanced/ Wins/ tab of your TCP/IP properties it is only applicable to XP as Win98 has it set by default.

These are handy references.

Simple File Sharing- enabled

Simple File Sharing - disabled

Ta again linney.

In the folder options, the use simple filesharing box IS ticked.

I now have passwords on both the win98 and XpPro boxes
for a user "Ian486" / with identical passwords.

I tried uninstalling kerio, ( & deletedthe \progFiles\kerio
sub-directory tree.
[ i didn't search the registry for kerio - maybe i'll try
that next time.]

I still got the same "\\XPATHLON..etc
- password " error on the win98 box.

Back in 2004 i couldn't get the network to work with kerio
" enabled", so unchecking the appropriate box i assume
means kerio is disabled.

network connections\ ianHome \wins \ advanced options
now say "enable netbios over TCP/IP"

I'll add below the results of some of the network command utilities.

three * end the current utility

i tried to specify the command used before each utility results.

Currently I get an error on the Win98 pc.

"Enter Network Password"

You must supply a password to make this connection

[x] save this password in your password list

I don't know why MSHOME shows up

I've run some of the utilities on the win98 box.
But it's a pain trying to transfer the results to the

I haven't tried re-enabling DHCP /DNS /LMHosts yet

Your gateway is set as 127.0.0.1 which is a loopback address.

Best to set you 98 to DHCP and let the router assign the the IP addresses on the network card. And the same for the XP box. That keeps everybody out of each others sandbox.

At some point I saw the gateway as 192.168.0.1 and somewhere else I saw the same address for the XP box. If you really talk to the router at 192.168.0.1 then you need to get the XP separated away, best by letting DHCP do it. If you need specific addresses for some purpose the router probably can restrict in settings.

Ed Fair
Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

What are you currently using to connect the two computers together, is it still the Crossover cable or a Router?

Have you tried the Safe Mode with Networking option from XP?

Can XP communicate with 98, is it only 98 that can't get in to XP?

I know you have probably mentioned all this, so this is just a recap of your situation, but this post is reaching enormous size and the overload of information, although commendable, takes some digesting, so please forgive me for asking for the précis version.

Hi Ed Fair & linney.

ta for your responses.
I'll reply briefly now & give a more detailed response later (sorry -<grin>).
pls excuse typos etc

To Ed (Fair)

Still learning this stuff.
At one stage i thought i had set the gateway set to
192.168.0.1
i just know that eventually i got the network going before without knowing what was appropriate.

i hope the other qns will be answered in the following.

To linney.

Q1.
i have been operating in two modes.
1. Normal 90% of my time.

isp_Connection Enabled
local_Connection disabled
kerioFirewall On

Originally a dialup modem but now
Xppro Pc using 4200 ADSL modem/speedstream router
configured as a modem - i did try to configure it as a
router at one stage couldn't get it to work.
connected via usb port to usbConnection on modem.

[ ethernet connection on modem unused]

2. Networked Xppro Pc & win98 pc.
other 10% - when it works.

Crossover cable.
isp_Connection Disabled
local_Connection Enabled
kerioFirewall Off

fixed TCP/IP addresses 192.168.0.1 for XpPro
192.168.0.4 for Win98

a rhine... etc network card in both pc's

I posted the network utility reports in the hope that
someone who knows this stuff would recognise a config error... etc

Q2.

i did try the safe networking.
I got the same \\XPATHLON password err described above.

Q3.

I will try XpPro to win98 & report

ta again for suggestions

Ian C

Take the XP to other than 192.168.0.1. to 0.2 or 0.3 will be OK. this will take it out of the gateway address of the router. Will also require a change on the 98's gateway for now and a further change when the router comes up.

Ed Fair
Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

See what you have set in Group Policy in XP.

Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / User Rights Assignments

Have a look at these type of settings and set them to your needs.

The Everyone group must be present in "Access this computer from the network"
Deny access to this computer from the Network - remove guests.
Log on Locally - add Everyone group.

Ta muchley you blokes ( i assume).
The network is now working. I had a bit more time over the weekend.

I changed the Xp to 192.168.0.2
[ For my education] i'm not sure that would make a lot of difference as the speedstream router network connection was disabled.
i think for this router the address is 10.1.1.1 ?
i'd like to get the modem functioning as a router later as i think that will provide more security.

I'm still using simple file sharing, though later i will try disabling the guest account etc. Kerio has an access from trusted network setting
- this i also dont like for security implications.]

Initially after getting this far i still had the password problem.

after shutting down both pcs,
get up next day, fired up both.
The win98 didn't stop for password entry [ changed back to logon for client networks].
Restarted win98 pc & the network started to work.

I cannot remember doing anything else.

I had a look at group policy etc as suggested. & changed various user rights assigments etc.
I also went through the practicallyNetworked suggestions [ again had the time].
the troubleshooting parts showed exactly the type of problem i was having.

Ta muchley [thanks very much] again.
