i have 4 machines on a 5 port hub with the main machine thats on all the time sending the internet connection to the hub through ICS i now want to add a laptop and get on the internet with it i have all the pcs set to automatically obtain an ip address and all works ok except sharing the internet to the wireless laptop everytime i try to share the internet on pc 4 (diagram below) it says an error occured while internet connection sharing was being enable ... a LAN connection is already configured with the ip address that is required for automatic ip addressing. I know this probably has an easy solution but i just cant figure it out.

You're trying to connect your wireless laptop through a wireless adapter on a wired machine? The ICS would have to be running on PC4 for this to work. As your drawing shows it, PC4 would have to be setup to act as a router to let the laptop connect to the Internet and the LAN.

I would suggest adding a wireless access point and uplinking it to your hub. This would let your setup work.

A better alternative is to connect a wireless router (most of which also contain a 4 port hub/switch) to your cable modem, and set up the access point to handle your Internet connection. Then you can connect both wired & wirelss machines to your LAN, and the wireless router will be the gateway to the Internet.

thanx but is there no way of doing this without spending more money? can i not have 2 internet connection sharers on the same hub like the main one and one to pass it onto the wireless laptop ? there must be a way please.

thanx

Well I don't really know a lot about these things.
Is the main machine a PC set up as a router?
If so couldn't you connect the wireless card to the main machine, being the router. And on this way you could maybe get internet on your laptop.
I really don't know if this could work so please don't blame me if I'm totally wrong.

To use ICS there cannot be any other DHCP server on the network segment.

Seriously, if you look you can find a "B" broadband router for under US $20.

That's pretty much what I said: the machine with the wireless card has to be your router. The PC4 cannot pass info along from the laptop to the network. It is possible to set up some Windows version to route, but I'm not sure the gateway data to get to the Internet will be work then.

My last post was in reference to Parcival's post. What he suggests might work, if you're desperate to do this without any further equipment. If you can put the wireless interface on "main machine" and put them both in Ad Hoc mode, you might get online with the laptop.
