I am trying to add a parallel port to a Compaq P2 400Mhz Win98se. The card has two com ports and one parallel.

Windows finds the device, adds the proper drivers, asks to reboot, gets to the point right before the Windows password comes up and hangs. I go into safe mode and check the device manager and it sees all of the ports. If I remove the devices from the device manager it will boot up.

Help, I've tried two different cards. I tried one from a local shop, then got one from CompUSA. After I opened up the last one I found out that the same company made both. However they were two different models.

Probably because there is a conflict in the com ports.
Cripple them, then set the parallel to 278/7 and see if it can load and run. May be marked as lpt2.
Suspect SIIG. And I've had no problems with any of their stuff except they change design but keep the same part number.

Also make sure the interrupts aren't in conflict any where. One port needs to be lpt2: (can't remember the port address)

The chip on the board says NetMos. I don't think it was the Com ports because the first card was only a parallel port. However I'll try the 278/7 setting when I go back tommorow. In the device manager it shows the onboard as LPT1 however the new one just has the name but it doesn't say that it is LPT2.

Should be jumpers on the board that allow you to change the address and IRQ. May be combinations that allow you to choose lpt 1,2, or 3. Or may be addresses 378, 278, 3BC.
Standard for LPT2 is 278 and 5, but since it is polled you should be able to use 7. 5 gets in the way of the sound card which likes to grab 3 interrupts.

And the documentation that shows the stuff is probably silkscreened on the board. Will probably be hard to read and harder to figure out.

Another thing to try if you don't have success re above posters' suggestions...

Often, an add-in parallel port card appears to need precedence over the on-board port. Try setting the motherboard's on-board parallel port to LPT2 (278 or 3BC) and the add-in card to LPT1 (378). Select suitable IRQs etc.

Hi,

To change the on-board lpt# go to device manager and select printer port and view the properties.

Change the properties from lpt1 to lpt 2

Good luck.

Well, you'll need to do it from the BIOS first of all. Immediately after switching on the PC, the POST screen often shows what's required to enter SETUP (or BIOS SETUP) - it's often the <Del> key. Once into the BIOS look for something like "Peripheral Setup". This will show the settings for the parallel port. You should be able to cycle through the options to change the address, e.g. 378, 278, 3BC etc., and ditto the IRQ. Traditionally LPT1 uses address 378, and LPT2 278 or 3BC. Select "Save options" before exiting the BIOS.

Hope that helps...

In the BIOS the parallel port may be disabled. I prefer to disable the ports I am not using. Sometimes they also can be assigned specific address ranges and can overlap. The IRQ's use these address ranges also.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks everyone. I changed the onboard parallel port to 278 in the BIOS. It booted up. The onboard stayed LPT1 and now the new one shows up as LPT2.

Hello all, i have the dual parallel port version, you say that you have no problems with this, i have huge problems with this. I am not using windows 98, i am using windows 2k, i have the on board set as lpt3 (even with it disabled) i can't setup the driver for it, the problem i run into is that the directions say to just let find the drivers, ok, do that and windows says that it can't find the drivers. Any input apprecieated.

Thanks,
James
