I have a legato 7.1.3 server running on Windows 2003 SP1. Are there any special considerations I need to know about when I add the Library? I have read about turning off RSM but what effect will that have on my disk to disk backup if any? Will I still be able to use the tape drive if I leave the RSM running?

Only one application should be drive the hardware at a time. Shutting off RSM will avoid unexpected RSM accesses when NW (or any other software) will use the tape drive. It will have no other affect.

In fact, the latest NW software (7.2) will not even allow you to install a jukebox if RSM is enabled.

When I turn off RSM I start getting errors when legato tries to backup the SYSTEM FILES, SYSTEM DB. It complains that it can not back those up since RSM is disabled. Do I need to set it to manual so Legato can turn it on and off?

NW does not even use RSM. What does the message say exactly?

Here is the error I get when I disable RSM.

* legato2:SYSTEM DB:\ save: VSS Snapshot is disabled for SYSTEM DB:\ and will not be used.L:\Program files\Legato\nsr\tmp\sd0000ac line 10: parse error
* legato2:SYSTEM DB:\ Removable Storage Database - rsmow: Could not start RSM service for backup operation.
* legato2:SYSTEM DB:\ Removable Storage Database - Error saving

The problem is that you want backup the Windows internal databases as well. For some parts, RSM is needed. However, it is forbidden for the hardware. As a consequence, if you disable RSM completely, this backup necessarily must fail.

RSM in general can be enabled/disabled at three levels: library, drive, and volume. By default, RSM is enabled at all three levels. And you have to enable it for the databse

You will find detailled info in the Admin Guide.

Best I could tell from the Guide was you got it all or nothing. Like I could not disable the library and have the rest. Is that correct?

1. From the Computer Management console, select Storage > Removable Storage > Physical Locations.
2. Under Physical Locations, right-click on the device you want to disable RSM, then select Properties.
3. In the General tab of the Properties box, ensure that the Enable Library checkbox is not checked.
4. Repeat step 2 and step 3 for each autochanger and stand-alone removable storage device connected to your system
5. If you cannot see the device in step(2) above, then go to "Device Manager" and disable the "Medium Changers"

Does this help?
