When I convinced them to get a 2K server and move away from a workgroup, a 2nd HDD wasnt considered "mission critical" no matter all the evidence I used to try to convince them (tried whining a bit too - still didnt work lol) Anyways, I think Ive convinced them to go for it finally. Id like to add the 2nd drive and set up mirroring. Havent done this since NT4 a few years ago. And at that time, the 2 drives were in the machine at the time of the OS install. Can I set this all up without risk to the data sitting on the current drive?

Everthing should be considered a risk....

Backup everything first.....

What type of machine do you have (dell, hp/compaq, gateway (yuck!))?

The reason why I ask is. Most branded machines have a raid utility. If you insert the drive and boot up into the raid management software (located on the PERC controller). You should be able to add the drive with out an issue. But live what VBrocks wrote. BACKUP EVERYTHING!!

Yep its a gateway - dont know why you say yuck, lol... Havent had a problem with a gateway to date at home or at work. But TY for the heads up about the RAID utility, hadnt thought of that. Definitely backing up. Currently, resticted to backing up vital files from the server to one of the workstations.

OK - got the HDD ordered and on its way. Now, need to ask a question that may seem a little basic to the rest of you.
The current disk is partitioned. To set up a true mirror, would I actually set up 2? In other words, partition the new drive to match the existing one, the set up the mirroring between the 2 "C" drives and also between the 2 "D" drives.
Current drive is Maxtor 120GB. Just ordered a duplicate drive. Partitioned as C: 8.79 GB and D: 105.7 GB. Partitioning the new drive when it arrives will result in X: 8.79 GB and Y: 105.7 GB. Planning to up mirrors as follows:

C: mirrored to X:
D: mirrored to Y:

If this isnt realistic, Im open to suggestions... My previous mirroring experience was NT4 with an unpartitioned drive.
