Why can't we open the Add/Remove programs applet from the control panel?
We have a Win2K Terminal Server running in Applications Server mode. We want to install a new program and we can't because we need to be in install mode.

help!

did you do a "change user /install" from the command line?

Brontosaurus,
no we didn't. What does it do?
but we tried running appwiz.cpl from the command line and it didn't work also.

that command puts you in install mode. once you've done that, you can run the setup executable for whatever program you're trying to install, assuming you're logged in as an admin....then when you've finished, you do a "change user /execute" to put your server back in normal mode.

ok we'll try that.
do you know what could have caused the applet to NOT run? It's the only thing in control panel that would not open. Is there a way to restore it (i.e make it work again?)

Thanks again.

I think it's unrelated. Try re-installing I.E. 5.5 SP2 or better from Microsoft Update site to fix it.

In Windows 2000, the applet does the same thing. Need to investigate why it didn't work but for the most part CHANGE USER /INSTALL is the way to go.

Once you're done, it's CHANGE USER /EXECUTE at the command line
