I'm trying to dcpromo a new server and am getting stuck at this error.

...forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use adprep...

The version of Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with AD on this computer

Now all DC's on our domain are Win2K3 R2. This machine is the same, no differences here. Any ideas?

The first thing I would do is check the version of the Schema. I recently had a similar problem. Go to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\NTDS\parameters there should be a key called "Schema Version" and for R2 this value should be 31.

Here is the article
I know you said all the DC's are R2 but this is a way to double check AD is definately up to date.

Ah ha! Thanks for the info. I'm seeing 30 for the Schema Value. Can I run adprep while clients are on the domain and working?

I did it after hours but there were still users in the office working. It only took a second to go from 30 to 31. I would recommend doing it during off hours personally but I can't back that with any fact. If something went wrong, off hours are a little easier in the headache department. Just remember Murphy's law. Make sure to do a back up just in case.

So I'm a putz. Turns out all my DC's are non-r2 2003. So that explains my first post. Now I've adprep'ed my original DC and that worked well. I'm noticing the other 3 DC's are still schema 30 in the registry though.

Doesn't /forest propegate this change? Or do I run this on all the DC's?

You need to run this on the Schema master and it should propogate out. Here are a few articles on upgrading from 2000 to 2003. This should help in upgrading from SP1 to R2

And here is the question I had posted on this board regarding this and the responses I got:

Hope this helps

I have assumed I ran this on the master but I'm not having doubts. I mean I ran it on the first DC that was created for this domain..

How can I ID which DC is the Schema master right now?
