I have read conflicting procedures in order to upgrade my 5.5 to 2003.

Most say to install Exchange Deployment Tools and run the diags, plus forest and domain prep. Then run ADC setup.

Another articles says to install ADC, then do forest and domain prep.

Which is the correct order?

Thanks for your help.

When I did I ran domainprep and forestprep first. I had no problems.

use the deployment tools
the adc is ran after the diags and after the forestprep and domainprep for all necessary domains
then install the adc from sp1

Hi!
The key here is whether you are running Forestprep and Domainprep before or after ADC.
If you have an existing Exchange 5.5 server and you are planning to install the first Exchange 2003 server in the same Exchange org so you can transfer user mailboxes and replicate public folders than it is crucial that you install ADC and configure the CA agreements before running Forestprep and Domainprep. Installing ADC and running the CA in advance extends partially the AD schema and allows you to import the exchange 5.5 attributes in AD. If you miss this step you will not be able to import the Exchange 5.5 data into AD – at least this is what Microsoft says and I’ve never tried the opposite way.
The most common mistake in this procedure is to forget to check whether the Exchange Organization and Site contain illegal characters (like underscore “¬_”). The CA will replicate the data successfully but later Exchange installation will stop complaining about the illegal character and you’ll have to clear the replicated attributes using Exchange 5.5 admin in raw mode.
When you are sure that CA replication is finished then you can proceed with Forestprep and Domainprep.
Again, MS recommends first partially extending the schema with ADC and replicating between Exchange 5.5 and AD and after that fully extending the schema and installing the first Exchange 2003.

Why does Microsoft tell you to run the Deployment Tools which run ForestPrep and DomainPrep first, then ADC? I am planning on installing the first Exch 2003 in the same org.

Can you install the ADC and not install Exch 2003 right away, or does it all have to be done at the same time?

I am worried about resource mailbox accounts being disabled and then not being able to re-enable until I have Exch 2003 up and running.

What do you think?
