Adaptec 29160 latest XP driver from adaptec.com will not work

I have a adaptec 29160 scsi card and a HP ultrium 215 tape drive installed on a XP workstation. I notice that a 15 gig backup job will take abour 2-1/2 hours (at a rate of 108MB/Min) to complete. I read somewhere that the latest XP driver for the adaptec 29160 scsi card resolves a speed issue. I downloaded and installed the new driver from adaptec.com but the tape drive stopped responding. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
