I just upgaded my pdc and bdc to 2000. I had to change the domain name so I used my last nt bdc and promoted then demoted the other two and installed 2000 on the new pdc. The old 2000 dc's now after ad has been set up on the new dc won't install ad. It keeps telling me that "The operation falied because. A suitable domain controller couldn't be found." The other problem i have is that when i go to install the oly domain name it takes is the old netbios domain name no the new fqdn domain name. any ideas?

We had the same problem. One NT4 upgrade and a clean W2K install on a second. We found that you had to add a line to our lmhosts files on the two servers.

127.0.0.1 localhost
IPaddress servername
IPaddressofupgraded server servername #Pre #Dom:Domainname
IPaddressofupgraded "Domainname \0x1b" #Pre

I have no idea how the guy helping me found this, but I can only assume it's looking at the old NT Domain name, even though it's been upgraded, all I know is that it worked after that. Has to be the same on any server that will replicate ad. Good luck

I have the exact same problem,

Although I am using 2 fresh copies of windows 2000, one is root domain class.com

and 2nd is trust trying to become a nwe domain (fief.class.com)

I need a solution for itbefore tommorow. Somehow hope the LMHOSTS will work.

I wish I could tell you where he got it, all I know is was buried in some MS knowledge base, and right now he's in the bahama's. Maybe a search on google. I don't know if the syntax would be the same for different domains or not. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
