Hi all, we current have an NT4 domain environment, and are soon to be moving over to Windows 2003 Active Directory, we have a single domain of 500 PC and about 25 servers and that's it.

I was wondering how easy it ws to setup DNS in AD and get it all working very well?

I keep reading up stuff about registering the domain, do we? Do the 'outside' see it.

Basically what step to I need to follow to get this all running nicely? and maybe let me know the best way to setup a 2nd DNS and replicate the 2.

Setting up DNS in Win2k really isn't that difficult. This Faq goes over the process rather nicely faq96-3017. It works even better if you use Windows for DHCP as well. Unless you are providing access to a public webserver, then there would be very little reason to Register your domain and allow access to your DNS servers.

use your dns servers for internal action. set up dns forwarders pointing at your isp's dns servers so your internal clients use the isp dns action when they need to hit the outside world. then dns life will be groovy.

If you do an in-place upgrade of your NT4 PDC to W2K3, DNS will be configured automatically.

Errr, noooo, don't use your AD DNS to publish it externally. This way everyone could see your network. You can however create different scopes (one internally, one externally) but I would rely on your ISP's DNS to resolve external names and publish necessary servers for you (like mail).

Yes, you might setup 2 DNS's (but also 2 W2K3 DC's) for redundancy. But keep your internal DNS's internally!!!
