AD and Win 98

Can you run AD with Windows 98 clients? Also, will the security settings still take effect?

What do you mean?
There is just an Directory Services client for W9x. And it will help you to access the Active Directory. (You will have in Find for example the possibility to search in AD).

But seriously, there is a DS client from MS, which we didn't use and then went to XP, so we don't need it now, but here are a couple of links that might prove useful for you to get to understand what it does:

Without these installed, our W98 machines and W95 machines did accept GPO configuration of local polices from the domain, so as far as I can tell Security isn't a big issue, but if you read the explanations in the GPO for each object you are configuring, most say at the bottom (Win9x, Windows 2000/XP) or something like that...

Yes, if your just authenticating and running scripts. If you want to get fancy, you may have to use the tools mentioned. I don't use them on my network, and I authenticate to the domain just fine, and I have a batch file that loads anti-virus software in the morning. Glen A. Johnson

On a related matter. I installed an new win2k server recently that I immediately setup as DC in AD. All went fine with install of AD. But afterwards the Win 98 machines we had around could not log into the domain ( or any other NT domain), they had previously to the win2k domain and NT domains. I demoted the server and now it is simply a file server. However, now no win 98 machine can connect to that server to open any file shares. All other win2k servers are accessible, even one that is virtually identical to it. Win2k and XP machine access it just fine.

Installed the AD client and still doesn't work.

Ideas?

pserko, did you try and find out what was different? I've not had any issues. Just curious.

Pserko, again DNS and NetBIOS issue!
WIn2k, XP,.. are using DNS.
Win9x are using NetBIOS!


As about what the other guys where saying, DS client does what microsoft is saying,. and nothing more. Don't expect to use GPOs. No Kerberos, no IPSec,.. etc. And you can find that DS client in Windows 2k Server CD also. Gia Betiu

For backward compatibility, you might try installing WINS on the server, or utilising the local hosts file on the Win98 machines.

If this is a DNS /NetBios issue then why do the win98 machines see and can get access to other Win2k resources on other servers?

I am going to remove the server from the Domain and AD today and rejoin. It may have been configured to not allow pre-Win2k clients. Let you all know if it works.
