Error message reads instruction at 0x06064156 could not be written.
Found a thread on this site 779-979584 that helped with getting explorer to not shut down when I went to the movie folders - that was helpful. It was posted by bcastner - thnks.
Anyway the above prob exists for trying to open an AVI file with either WMP or any other similar prog 0 Win DVD or Win Amp.
I get thumbnails most of the time when I initially open them but when I select which prog to use it gives the above error message.

Is it all AVI files or only just one that you are having problems with?

No, it's not all AVI files but all recent ones - say last 2 weeks. Those that existed before that still play under WMP 10.
I also have SP2 installed but that has been in for a month. I have Spybot Sys Works 2005 and Adaware which don't fix it.
The thumbnails thing: sometimes when I open a folder a thumbnail image of the movie will appear in the bottom left area of the screen under video tasks - details - really frustrating because you can see a pic of the intro but when you rt click the file you get the above error message.
I've tried logging on as a new user - same result.
Some background - I used to get an explorer.exe error message similar to above "the instruction at 0x0937415b reference memory at 0x00000000 - memory could not be written as soon as the folder was selected. This was fixed by removing a registry key "In Proc Server3 which apparrently prevents Explorer from loading shmedia.dll for AVI files.
Deleting this key fixed the explorer error message - now iI get the above when I try to play them.

Sorry - forgot to add - downloaded DivFix - reported files had no errors - used it to rearrange but diddn't fix problem.

Read this link and see what you think. Maybe you are in a position of one fault being caused by the presence of shmedia.dll and the other fault being caused because of its absence?

Have a look at what is says about Context Menu Handlers in the associated links too.

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Checked out the link info videothumb checked out O.K - after running regsvr32 shmedia - O.K original problem came back - that is: When I open a folder that contains AVI files I get the following message (haven't even clicked on sub folder yet)
Explorer.Exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0 x 019a415b referenced memory at 0 x 00000000. The memory could not be written.

Couldn't get shellExView - site wasn't available for some reason - so I couldn't check Context Menu handler.
Tried in Safe Mode - same Explorer.Exe message.
Ran ChkDsk - same prob.
Ran Sfc - same prob.
Perhaps ShellExView will help but I can't get the utility.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

Thanks for the link - donloaded ShellExView and checked handlers - didn't appear to be anything obvious there.
Wanted to take your advice on an XP re-install but I think I might need some hel,p with this.
When I boot and ask to install I get a message to say "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows is newer than the version on the CD. Followed by:
Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered.
I have SP2 installed and I think this means I would have to go for a new install but what I think I need (you are suggesting) is a re-install.
Any ideas on a workaround?

The reinstall would revert you back to the SP version of your XP CD, probably SP1. You would then have to reapply SP2. This requires you to be booting from XP CD (to do the repair/reinstall) not running it from within Windows.

Many people Slipstream SP2 into their XP CD creating a SP2 XP CD, which would alleviate the problem of mismatched files.

The other way is to manually remove SP2 and just do the repair the way you first tried and then reapply SP2.
