Hello, I am assistant sys-admin @ Stockholm School of Economics, and we are in great trouble at the moment.
My college studentbody has recently had a breakdown in its file server's filesystem, (server called Vargen). This means that most files on the file server disk are destroyed. The c: drive on this server unfortunately had the active directory of our domain, since this server also functioned as domain controller.
The files of c: are mostly intact, though the dos-partition is gone, so we are unable to boot this server.
One of our main problems is that the mail, on another server (the mail server), is unavailable if we cannot restore our user-database, and since we did no backup of our domaincontroller, we cannot restore it. To restore the mail access, we are trying to find a solution, where we could restore just the dos-partition, in order to make a backup of the user-database, so we finally could reinstall a new domaincontroller, and restore the user-database. If we managed to do that, we would have access to the mail database again, and minimize the amount of damage done to our studentbody.
I am hoping that someone could help us soon, since we have been working 26 hours to try to fix these problem with least amount of damage.
If anyone could understand why a 4 x SCSI drives RAID 5 fileserver would go under bit by bit, in a mather of a week, would surely enlighten us here. Would it be due to viruses or is it hardware maintainace problem, or just that harddrives are expandable?
