Can anyone explain how SP list data can be accessed through SP web services, such as Lists.asmx ? I'm thinking of using lists as a way of capturing data and then using the XML web part to display the data elsewhere in the portal. Is this feasible ?

Why use a webservice? If its the same machine you can just look up the list data by using the object model, and ofcourse a custom webpart.

start form here:

SPSite oSite = SPControl.GetContextSite(Context);

Site has Web object, web has list objects, enz....

Goodluck

Sorry, I'm new to web part programming - can you give me some more guidance or direct me to an example ?

Thanks
