Hi,

I am trying to fix this Stop:C0000218 problem with my Windows 2000pro. It seems to be the registry issue.

I would like to repair the corrupted registry by replacing the corrupted one from Winnt folder. (I don't know the the exact place but I know it must be in the Winnt folder.) On my neighbor's computer, I saw a backup registry folder in C:\Winnt\repair\ but I am not sure where the current corrupted registry would be. Please advise me.

Can anyone advise me how to access the Recovery Console from DOS mode, please?

I created the 4 bootdisk from his win2000 cd. I am now in the DOS mode with C:\Winnt>_ prompt for Recovery Console. But, I don't know the next steps to get into the Console. Please help me.

Please help me.

Thank you.

Sounds like you are in the console.

Your next step would be to type 'chkdsk c: /p' and press enter. Will take a bit to finish. When it's done, restart and see if all is well.

If everything looks good, I would strongly suggest a full backup at this point.

Hi mhkwood,

I did the "chkdsk C:/p". It did not show any error. I thought it went well. I restarted the PC but it is still same "Stop:C0000218" error with blue screen and keep restarting again. The main issue is exactly as the thread616-86626 topic's first message.

How could I repair/recover the registry using the console? What would be the steps?

Please help.

I would assume that you don't have a backup of your registry. If you do, post back for restore instructions.

Otherwise, easiest thing would be to do a repair installation of Windows. Boot from your floppies (although your CD should be bootable unless your hardware doesn't support it). When prompted, press "R" to repair, then "R" again for emergency repair, then "F" for fast repair. Can't remember the rest of the prompts, but you should be fine with accepting the default values.

You will probably lose some of your configuration information, hardware and printers you have added since Windows was initially installed will be lost. Your data should be safe.

Don't forget to reapply the most current service pack and any patches as these may be lost in the process as well.

Hi mhkwood,

Thank you for the respond.

I would like to share the update info about my issue.

I accidentally got luck by doing the following steps without losing my files.

I boot us the pc with those 4 disks and reinstalled the W2K pro on the same drive and same folder.

I went to the Microsoft Website ( and downloaded the SP2 according to the KB - Q 260233 because I have 200G hard drive.

I created the emergency disk just after the all installation is done. So, now I have 4 bootdisks and emergency disk incase for the future system failure.

I honestly, did not loose any file. Of course, I had to reinstall all the personal programs because of the old (corrupted) registry was gone.[/color]

I am now thinking to change the C drive's file system from NTFS to FAT but don't know the best and safe way to do it.

I am not sure for which service pack is the best too. Is SP2 is pretty stable as Microsoft said?

So far, my computer is doing so fine.

Please advise me what else should I do to prevent from the hell like I just had for two days.

Thank you.
