Hey,

I have a copy of sql server 2005 express intalled on my laptop. my laptop communicates with my desktop via wireless router. I have an application running on the desktop that tries to access the sql server on teh laptop.
I have no luck so far. I don't need to have sql server installed on the desktop as well, do I? Also what are the workstation components for with the SQL Server 2005 express? I have enabled TCP on the laptop and the firewall is told not to block sql server.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

You'll at least need an ODBC or some other connector on your desktop which points to the SQL server on your laptop. With an ODBC, you don't need any SQL components installed on your desktop.

Also, I don't advise using a wireless connection unless you absolutely have to. Wireless connections are fickle and tend to be less stable than cable connection. I know, cable connections are a pain, but they are 99% reliable and can be faster than a wireless connection. SQL usually needs a consistant connection to transmit across a network and doesn't play well with connections that go in and out like a wireless one. Plus there are security issues with wireless networks, etc.

Hope that helps.
