Accessing files on a VM WITHOUT connecting via RDP

Is is possible to access the files on a VM (which I normally connect to via RDP) without actually using RDP to remote into it?

When I'm connected to a VM via RDP, I can access the Desktop of the physical computer at which I'm sitting from the VM with a path like this:
\\tsclient\C\Documents and Settings\reblazer\Desktop

...but what I'm asking is can I go in the other direction?

You should be able to UNC to a virtual machine just like it was a physical. There should no difference.

I don't understand how to do that. Into the "Remote Desktop Connection", I enter the following for the Computer Name:
[tt]dev01.abcCompany.com:49179[/tt]
Then it prompts me for an AD username and password. How would do I access the files using a UNC share?

Is this Virtual Machine part of your Network, Domain, or LAN? Have you got some Folders on the Virtual Machine that are Shared and accessible to people from other machines?

It's not on the same network, domain, or LAN - that's why I have to qualify it so fully:
[tt]dev01.abcCompany.com:49179[/tt]

As far as your second question about shared folders --- no, that is what I am asking for assistance in doing.

Because of the crappy way the Windows file sharing protocol used to work, most (read: all) firewalls prevent access to the ports required. You shoul have to set up a VPN and tunnel through that to get at the files. That's way more complicated than connecting by RDP.

There's no way to set up a folder that points to here:
[tt]dev01.abcCompany.com:49179[/tt]
and somehow further specify the path to that folder?

The VM should have an IP address, just like a regular machine...

so accessing it via IP might be the ticket...

e.g.

\\<IP address of VM>\<share name>

if you have a software firewall running on the VM, it may block the attempts to connect to the VM, in that case you will need to configure it...
