Hello All,

I inherited a system (Netware 5 w/ win2k PC) with databases scattered throughout. Some of the databases need to be protected while others do not. The “system.mdw“ file is in a folder which houses most, but not all, of the databases are stored. My question is; does it matter where this file is stored in relation to where the databases are? Is there a way to make a single PC a member of multiple workgroups?

Thanks guys!!

A single version of Access is registered to one System.mdw file at a time and that System.mdw can control security for multiple databases.

However, there is a way to open Access and tell it to open a specific database using a different System.mdw file. That System.mdw is then active for as long as you keep Access open. When you close it - it will open up normally again with the default System.mdw file.

The way to do this is to use a desktop shortcut.
Set the target to
C:\PATH\msaccess.exe /wrkgrp \\SERVER\PATH\xyz.mdw \\SERVER\PATH\xyz.mdb

Remember that if you have spaces in your server or path names you'll need to scaller double quotes all around the place. That pain of doing so, and getting it working, will forever teach you not to use spaces in object names - anywhere.

Right. You can also make shortcuts that actually open particular databases using particular workgroups. Just set the target to (for example):
"C:\PATH\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\PATH\DataBase.mdb" /wrkgrp "T:\PATH\SecurityFile.mdw"

This makes it possible to just double click on an icon and go straight into the database.

And no, it doesn't matter if the mdw and mdb are in the same directory.
