access violation error 0xc0000005 in Access 2

Our administrative assistant has a database that keeps up with all correspondence coming in and out of the office, as well as responses that are due to us and action items we have due to others.

She lists all items in a table and then runs a macro that pulls open items up into a single table. She has been running this with no problems for a couple of years. Every now and then there may be a small problem here or there with the file but nothing major.

She updated the database this morning as usual and then proceeded to run her macro. When she ran the macro she got the following error message:

Dr. Watson
Access violation error 0xc000005 has occurred
at address 0x0404dd8e.

Any idea how I can help her resolve this problem.

She is running Windows NT and Office 97.

Hi,

Have there been any system problems/system downs while the database was open?

Has the database structure been updated recently?

Has the macro been enhanced recently?

Is there anything peculiar about the data that was entered that the macro can't handle.

Is it a VBA macro? Can you debug/step through the macro until you reach the point where the problem occurs?

Sorry I can't be any more help that this but it's the sort of place that I'd start out.

She is checking some things for me right now so far this is what I know.

Yesterday she was entering data into the database and she inadvertently hit the power button on her tower with her knee and shut the system down unexpectedly.

As far as structure goes she added a new table for 2004 data but it has been working since that was added with no problems until this morning (after her shutdown).

The macro has not been changed.

Nothing peculiar about the data that we can figure out as it is the usual.

I am not in the same building with her but I can go try the step/through issue with the macro. She just went into the Database and created the macro so I am not sure how it is done.

I am wondering if a compact/repair might help with the problem or if I would be making it worse.

Access 97 is incredibly sensitive to network/power changes so I suspect the inadvertent power turn off is the problem. You could try doing a compact and repair, it won't do any harm and will tell you if it cannot recover the database. If that doesn't work, create a new database and import all of the objects into it and try again.
HTH - I've been there and it's awful - time to upgrade, those problems don't happen in XP

Repair Database said it repaired successfully but made no difference as we still encountered the error.

Compacting the database worked and we no longer have the access violation error. We did keep a copy of the database before we compacted it just in case we run into problems.
