Access using terminal services

I have a few VPN users using some Access applications and they run terribly slow. I've read that my 2 best options are either replication or terminal services. I glanced at what I would need to do for replication and it looks very involved.
Question... The application's front end is on the user's PC while the backend containing only the tables is on the server. MS Access is only installed on the client PC's and NOT on the server. Does Access need to be installed on the server to allow my users to use the applications via terminal services?

Yes, it does. Terminal services does not use the programs installed on the client PC. It is designed to simulate and support "dumb terminal" configurations. All programs run on and must be installed on the Terminal Services system.

In Terminal Services, you can install one copy of a program to be used by all Terminal Services clients, or you can install a separate copy of the program for each Terminal Services client. This choice is made when you install the program. With Microsoft Access, I usually install one copy of the run-time version for all clients to use in the Terminal Services environment. (Be aware, though, that run-time Access does not have the toolbars of the full version. You'll need to design your own toolbars.)
