Access Security Question

Hello.

I have read about two faq's on Access Security, including one provided by Microsoft.

My question is this: I set up users and what not, and it creates my work group file on My machine, inipendent of the database I want to secure.

So what happens when a user on the network, with out that file, logs on?

I am kind of confused.

Thanks,

This is where many go astray.

The workgroup file contains only the user and group definitions and group memberships. It does not contain anything about a particular database. The database itself has hidden system tables that contain the permissions information.

You haven't secured anything yet. Try to set permissions with no database open. You'll find that the User and Group Permissions option on the menu is grayed out. You must open the database before you can set permissions. Once those permissions are set (assuming you do it right - like removing Admin's permissions, too), the database is protected no matter where it is.

So, for other users to use the database, you must also place a copy of the workgroup file in a location where they can join it - typically in the same directory as the database.

Thank you both.

I read both faq's referenced Willir (Yes, huge Frank Herbert Fan). Actualy, the MS faq is what drove my question.

The line on page 5 , last paragraph on the page that says

"Setting a paswsword for the default admin user account activates the logon dialog box so that users will be prompted for a valid user id and password each time that they start microsoft access"

is what confused me.

It sounds like a local setting.

I will review some more.

Thanks,

I thank you Willir.

Reading and testing now. I think I will have it soon.
