Access Permissions - URGENT!! HELP!!!!

Hey Guys/Girls,

I have a big problem. A user on my network had a system crash, and was running office 2000 and access 97. She has a specific database that is absolutely essential, and requires access 97 (From what I am told by the prior IS manager). When her PC crashed, I managed to upload her access database (*.mdb) to our terminal server. She has been accessing it through a mapped drive since, and now her computer crashed again. We finally got her a new PC but now NO ONE can open this database. I get the error &quot;You do not have the appropriate permissions to open the <NAME> object. Please contact your administrator or the creator of the object. I am completely lost on how to get her access back, and could really use some help. Thanks!

You might check to see if current file permissions on the server have changed or see if you can recover the System.mdw file from the old pc (sounds like the owner of the database was set to some other group within Access other that the Admins (default) group.

Yes. Look for any/all MDW files on the crashed computer, or on a network. If this info is superimportant, you can find a professional firm to crack the security for you.

If they messed up on the security, you can try opening a new database and importing all the objects from the original database--but if they did it right, then you won't be able to do this.

Once you locate the .mdw file on her PC or on the network, open MS Access Workgroup Administrator under the Programs folder on the C drive. Then join that workgroup.

1. Remove all (ALL!) permissions from the Users group, and the Admin user. I am not 100% on what to do with the Admins group; everyone else says to remove the Admin user from the Admins group as well, but I don't see how that helps any. I need to check the MS Security FAQ again myself.


I personally leave enough permissions on the Admin user so that I can compact the database without joining the proper workgroup (so I can compact the database from a context menu, in an Explorer window). I think I allow &quot;Open Database&quot;, &quot;Open Exclusive&quot;, and permission on some system table required for compacting. Trial-and-error.
