Access Denied to "Safely Remove Hardware"

Hi all - here's one I never saw coming - users locked down, possibly due to "prevent access to control panel" being enabled via GPO, get acces denied when they try to use the safely remove hardware feature for their usb drives. The result is holding your breath, waiting for the pulsing led on the stick to be off and yanking it out. This has resulted in a BSOD on more than one occasion!

I've tried my hardest online to find an answer but all I find is people trying to get rid of the icon, somehow attached to hotplug.dll. I don't want to get rid of it, I want it to work without being blocked! D:

Anything I've missed?

Anyone any thoughts? It's a real problem here that noone can safely remove their usb drives

Have you tried to remove the Contorl Panel restrictions and confirmed that is the cause of the problem?

If it is the problem, then instead of locking down the entire control panel try disabling certain applets.

I haven't had a chance to turn of fcontrol panel restrictions and try that, but I normally just set "disable access to control panel" in a GPO and I've never had a problem like this anywhere else so I'm not sure it's the cause. I'll get a chance to try next week hopefully but in the meantime all ideas welcome so I have something to try while I'm there.
