Access Denied during network copy

I have a small home network connected through a gateway/router/firewall. With regard to the network, everything seems to be working. However, when I try to copy a file from a share on another computer to the local computer, I get the message

Cannot copy <file>: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.

Some things I've already checked:

[li]The disk is not full or write-protected and there is not already a file with the same name as the one I'm trying to copy[/li]
[li]I have ownership of the folder and I'm logged in with an account which has administrative privileges[/li]
[li]I have disabled "Use simple file sharing" and set the permissions to give "Full Control" to the "Everyone" group for the root of drive C and all children. I've also double-checked that the permissions have taken effect on the folder I want to copy the file to.[/li]
[li]I've also set full control on the shared folder I'm copying from.[/li]
[/ul]

If anyone has any ideas about how to fix this, I'll be very greatful.

And the filename?
And the folder?
And the Operating System and Service Pack level of your computer? (SP2 "fixed" this issue in the main).
And the Operating System and Service Pack level of the remote computer?

I'm sorry for leaving out those details.

Both computers are fully patched Windows XP SP2. Visiting Windows Update shows no available updates.

The file is actually the filezilla setup file, named Filezilla_2_2_29_setup.exe.

The shared directory is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Vince\My Documents\downloads.

The directory on the computer I want to copy the file to has the same path, but I've learned that the same problem occurs regardless of where I try to copy the file.

The "Vince" account on both computers is in the "Administrators" group and has no password.

Both drives are formatted with NTFS, but I have an external drive, formatted with FAT32 which also gets the same error.

Locally, I can copy files anywhere. I only have the problem when I try to copy files from a shared folder.

Can you copy from the shared folder?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

Could be an issue with having the same username on both machines?

I have noticed this problem when the root (C: say) is shared rather than a folder.

I assume you have tried enabling 'use simple file sharing" It is safer than giving everyone full permission on the root!

A User profile is by default denied access to even the Administrator of the computer.

These have to be treated specially. The settings at the root are not sufficient; you need to alter the permissions on the individual folders themselves. The default settings take precedence over your Root settings.

By default, only the User is listed with permissions to a Profile folder. You need to explicity grant the Administrator permission. For access by a remote computer on your LAN you need (With Simple File Sharing disabled) to grant the Group Everyone permission; if Simple File Sharing is enabled (the default setting for XP Pro) you should add the User Group (not the username) Guest to the profile.

Microsoft calls the default settings on user Profiles "Level 1 and Level 2 security."

Also, check the Netbios setting on all machines. You want to use the middle of three radio buttons under the WINS tab, and not the first button:

I am having a very similar problem that may have the same cause. In my case, both machines are XP Home SP2, but the symptoms sound practically identical.

The two systems in question are a laptop (the problem child) and a desktop.

I get the exact same error message when trying to copy (not *access*, mind you, but *copy*. The laptop can open files on the remote share and save them back to the remote share, but cannot save them locally or copy them locally. If I attempt to copy a large file, there will be disk activity and the "copying file" animation on the local machine just as one would expect, but at 100% "complete" it fails with the "Access Denied" error message quoted by Ghodmode. It does not matter where on the local machine I attempt to copy/save the files, the result is the same.

Oddly, I *can* successfully copy the same files to the laptop if I initiate the copy from the desktop.

Even more oddly, if I attempt to copy a directory tree from the remote machine to the local laptop, the folders themselves will successfully copy, but not the files within the folders. It will happily copy empty folders until it runs into a file, and then it's access denied again and the entire copy process halts.

For what it's worth, this is a fresh install of XP on the laptop and all available patches from windows update.

I had a video file which was a copy from a vcr tape made through a tv tuner card which no way could i get to i from another computer and it would not let me send it accross the network from it local computer
what I did was made a copy of it on the same hardrive same folder then change the name of the copy filed and them could move it any ware the only thing i can think of is the probram that created it did not want it to leave the computer
