I have an access stock control system. and i need to interface it with an older system using clipper dbfs with ntx style indexes. Is there anyway within access to maintain these indexes ????

It is possible to link (attach) Clipper .dbf files to a Microsoft Access database. To do so, link the file as a dBASE IV file. Note, however, the index may or may not be updatable.

Clipper provides an alternative indexing method (.ntx) to the dBASE standard (.ndx). The Clipper index format is not recognized by Microsoft Access; therefore, Microsoft Access cannot update it correctly.

However, if the Clipper application was developed by using the dBASE .ndx format, Microsoft Access updates the index correctly.

Thanks Thornmastr I had a horrible feeling it may be the case so i guess i will have to write a program that index the files after i have manipulated them in access. Do you know if it is possible to use access to generate a fresh ndx file from scratch???

Access does very well at updating DBASE type indexes...Creating them in Access is not really viable. You create them in Dbase. Access, if it has to, will update them; but that is the best you are going to get. Robert Berman
