I have aa Access 2000 project that is linked to tables on a central SQL Server. The project will be deployed via citrix for up to 50 users. Does the fact that only the tables are on SQL mean that the concurrent usage limitations of Access will still apply?

Hi jezmondo,
I know that all the startup limitations should work if this is what your asking but you might have problems with the access usergroups if you need SQL authenticity to access the tables. I am not to sure about this as i am quite new to using SQL tables within Access. But i would think that if your users used windows authentication they should have all the restrictions and permissions that you have given them in the Access security system.

I hope my very limited knowledge is of some use.

jezmondo,

with only 50 users you should be fine. the concurrent usage of access is alot more then 50 users.

The concurrency problems are more to do with Access backends, and Microsoft recommends no more than about 10 concurrent users. You should be OK with a shared front end though, as no changes are made and it is therefore unlikely to corrupt.

Compared with SQL Server Access has more problems over record locking and the database engine has much weaker query optimisation. They are the areas that particularly limit a pure Access system.

It is worth noting that a poorly designed application that allows users to browse through tables will create record locking issues whatever the backend.

You will not be limited by Access. Sql Server will handle the 50 concurrent users, but 1 Citrix server may not. I deployed an application such as yours and ran into performance problem on Citrix with about 25 concurrent users. We added a second Citrix server and that took care of the performance problem.
