accesing a broken XP machine

Im trying to access an XP Pro machine from my XP Pro machine. I can map to his C drive but because he hasnt checked the "allow file changes" box i cant access windows folder, where i need to stick a file.
is there some other way of doing it using telnet or something? i know his username and password.

Did you map to the C$ hidden share? If so did you use the Administrator's username and password? If you did then you should be able to copy a file to almost any folder unless your friend has been changing the default NTFS permissions. I'm not sure I understand what the "allow file changes" box is, unless you're talking about NTFS security settings. Give me some more info and I'll try to help you out.

if you right click on your C rive in XP then go to sharing and security.. there is a check box for "allow people connected to this machine to change my files".

I only use Windows XP in a corporate environment and I've never seen that security setting. Maybe his C drive isn't an NTFS partition. You can try mapping to the hidden share by mapping to the following "\\computer name\c$"

Give that a try and see if you can copy using that share.
You can also try right-clicking on his folders once you're mapped to see if it will let you change the security settings.

when i try mapping to C$ it ask me for a username and password.
i input his username and password, but then it chnages the username to "computername/guest" , and doesnt let me in.
something im missing?

Make sure you put his username in as computer\user.
Usually C$ is an administrative share which means the username that you are using has to be part of the local administrator group.

Does he know the administrator password? You can try using that username and password if he does.

i am using the administrator password, and it doesnt like it.
jumps from computer\username
to
computer\guest
after i hit enter.
like it doesnt recognise the account or something.
think im screwed to be honest.
