Hello guys, it seems like i got a little problem with the acces privileges at my WIN 2K.

the main problem is that windows stops me from saving (sometimes openeing-) files from my harddisk. I mostly get the problem when i try to save a file from the i-net or try to open files per programs. Also if i try to install Programs, i get error messages like "cannot write on ...../local machine/desktop" (<-mostly) or "you do not have the acces previleges to open a file from here" or something. it seems to me like it attributes to the acces on my local harddisk. note that my win 2k is a german installation, so I translated the messages.

I realy dont get it, because I DO have a local admin account (its standalone) and should have ALL rights on this machine ]:

this may sound like a little problem to you, but this prevents me from installing software that i need.

anyone got an idea how to handle with this problem. i had a look at the services menu, but couldnt find anything strange :[ plz help me if you can, BIG thx

Did you set this machine up? If not - can you ask who did, what they have done? If you have a local administrator account, it may be a good idea to take ownership of the whole of the C: drive (security, advanced button, owner tab), including subcontainers and objects. Then give yourself full permissions to C: drive - resetting permissions on all child objects - advanced button, permissions tab).

Don't know what these options will say in German, but its the one check box on the screen in both cases.

This should give you full access to everything - it may take a while to run.

Post back if still a problem after this.

I'm adding this here because I seem to hve a similar (but not nearly as bad!) problem.
I started with a clean install of W2K. In general, apart from the usual user errors (ed. crap! it's the software!) things went reasonably well UNTIL ....
My Corel Wordperfect Office install went berserk. To cut a long story short, I install WPO then try to run a Service Pack.
I get a message saying "You do not have access to make the required system modifications. Please rerun this installation with an administrators account."
I am logged on as Administrator. I've gone through and given myself every right I can find. WPO has been installed/uninstalled approximately 41 times. The SP was originally downloaded when I was using WIN98 and I thought maybe it had some hidden thing saying "this bloke is an underling; do not let him do anything." Copied it to a CD and then copied it back - no luck. (It's about 85Mb so I really do not want to download it again.)
All other SPs and updates and whatevers have no problem.
Should I have tried 42 times?

Cheers,
Paul J.

Was there a reason for the clean install? (I'm just wondering if you have a hardware problem). Sounds like something has updated the policies in force (or you've got a hardware problem that's manifesting itself like that).

btw - does WPO (unservicepacked) work ok?

As its a new install, I'd be tempted to start again - but comments like 'apart from the usual user errors' do make me wonder about your hardware (on a good machine I don't get any errors installing 2k).

I was joking about the errors - almost none in W2k but lots of fumbles with application reinstalls. The clean install was originally to upgrade from '98.
For some reason which I cannot remember, I tried to reinstall W2K and it just went into a loop. I had an urgent job in hand so just acquired an extra (secondhand) HDD and installed W2K on it.
The whole sorry story actually goes back to WPO. Could not get CorelCENTAL to work and Corel tech support gave me all sorts of things to try. Along the way, I blundered - hence the reinstall of W2K.
All of WPO works fine except for CorelCENTRAL.
I'm wondering about that secondhand HDD but every other package that I've reinstalled and/or updated is fine. It's only WPO that gives me the 'access' error.

Cheers,
Paul J.

Take it you've used WPO install files successfully before (as they now look like possible culprit - given 2k & all other apps ok....)
