i'm about to add an additional processor to my proliant 3000r box running NW5.1 sp6...do i need to do anything on the netware side before or after doing this???

I've never done this before but am going to take a stab at it. Not sure but there "may" be a jumper on the motherboard that needs to be set to "see" the second controller. Next, I'm assuming that you will need to enter the Compaq System Config Utility to either add or verify that the 2nd CPU is working. This could also be verified with the Compaq Server Diagnostic Utility. You can run it from a floppy if it wasn't originally installed to the system partition.

Once inside Netware, you'll want to load monitor and go to multiprocessor parameters. You'll want to start the second CPU on startup.

If I remember correctly from a recent class, NW 5.1 has limited SMP capabilities. It doesn't utilize the second CPU for all operations. NW 6 does and has many more tweaks available to set how it uses the second CPU.

Good luck.

Hi

We have multi-processors in all our Netware 5.1 sp6 servers and they rarely get over 1% on the second processor. I would not bother to install it at all, save it for a box which can realy use it, or wait till you go Netware 6 which does have more SMP calls.

regards

David

I agree, you are not going to see any improvement on NetWare 5.x.

If you are going to go through with it, I believe that on a Proliant, all you do is plug it in. you should probably post on the Compaq forum though just to make sure, as that would be OS independent.
