I just built a computer and have some minor issues. The PC works fine, boots fine, etc. However, in the device manager it has a question mark beside 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)' and 'Multimedia Audio Controller'.

The Video card I am using is an ASUS9180, and the sound card is a SB Live 5.1 Digital.

If you look under display settings, it can't even find the chipset type and settings for the video card. Under sounds, it hasn't picked up my sound card either.

I have installed the latest nVidia drivers so I don't know why this is happening. I have also installed all the motherboard drivers.

I am still scratching my head. I haven't ever had problems with Windows XP, as it is usually good at detecting hardware.

Any ideas?

If the devices are onboard you should have gotten a disk with the MOBO. make sure you run this when you set up the computer or when asked for drivers for these devices.

The Video and sound card aren't onboard.

Have you disabled the onboard sound in the bios? if not this often will bring up a Q mark because you are using a seperate sound card (also disable midi and gaming ports) because they are on the soundcard.

Yes, all disabled. I have the latest nVidia drivers installed and it still has a question mark beside 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)'. Chipset type and settings for the video card still haven't been picked up.

Should I download the actual ASUS drivers instead of the nvidia drivers (not that it will make any difference)?

In bios check that IRQ for video is disabled, try moving the sound card to another slot,or taking it out until video get's setup first. What system board are you using? Does it have onboard video? if so disable that. As to audio...You can run both the onboard audio and the soundblaster card at the same time, Windows xp will allow this no problem,I have SB 128 pci on board for my headset, and running communication software like roger wilco, and have the game audio coming out the 6.1 speaker setup attached to my Audigy. One of the other settings you can try is enable/disable in bios the plug and play aware os setting.

Be sure you install the MB Drivers on the MB supplied CD. Then always use the drivers that come with the device you are installing. Asus video card, use the asus drivers as they may be tweeked. Nvida only does the chipsets. I've ran into this a few times on different branded nvida stuff. Follow directions, like uninstalling old drivers first and installing generic windows drivers before installing your new drivers.

Yeah, I know its a pain but sometomes ya gotta do it the hard way.
