We had a drive taken offline by raidmanager and after replacing it with what we know is a good drive, it failed with the same error (a drive failed because it experienced a write failure 3F80, then 3F82 after the replacment drive was inserted). Now we tried this with all our spare replacement drives and it seems like there is an issue with just that slot on the A1000. Am I talking nonsense or would you recommend a cold restart of the entire system? I don't see any problems relating to the battery so I don't think that is the problem. Any ideas?? Thanks!
Steve

A reboot probably wouldn't do any harm, but if all your replacement disks are experiencing similar problems, perhaps the fault lies in the slot itself, or maybe the controller? Do you have a maintenance contract? If so, I'd be asking them in to diagnose and repair as necessary. Good luck.

Thanks Ken. No we don't have a contract on this device unfortunately. I will try the reboot and see how it goes. I am hoping that something is just hung on that particular slot. Cross your fingers.....

BTW - we are going to replace this array with something newer. Any thoughts out there for a good reliable array? We only need about 150gb max. We also don't want to get into the need of having to replace batteries each year either. I may start a new thread on this. Thanks!!

Steve, fingers crossed! Will get back to you later with other storage options, but I agree the A1000 is a real pain to diagnose.

Guys, I shut down the A1000 last night after making a couple backups of the data on it. With the server down and the A1000 up, I replaced the drive and its internal intelligence failed every drive I put in there. I started the server and tried the utilities to unfail the drive, to rebuild the LUN and everything else that I could think of to no avail. So I finally wiped out the LUN containing that slot and recreated it without using that slot and we are fine. That particular drive/slot is unassigned but the funny thing is, is the light is now green. Whatever, I can't spend too much more time on it. So I am now researching another newer array from Sun that might not have that infamous yearly battery replacment requirement. So if anyone is using arrays other then the D1000/A1000 please let me know your experiences. Otherwise we might start doing a raid 1 with as many disks as possible on the D1000. Comments??
