I am trying to prepare for what might happen if we lose every DC in our domain. How do you perform disaster recovery for AD? I backup ther system state nightly for each DC in the domain.

If i have NO dc's left in the forest, is it true that i cannot use DCPROMO /ADV to restore from media? How do i restore?

Guess your best bet then is to have some identical hardware available at all times OR to take your different hardware and gracefully make it a DC using DCPROMO then remove it from the domain without a demotion. That way you could simply restore AD and not the OS.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

And then after I pull it off the network, just restore from a system state from one of the real DC's? Not a bad suggestion.

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes, you got it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

I did finally get my directory restored. What a hassle though.

So with 2003 this is much easier? It seems crazy that you have to go through all this.

I like the idea earlier in the thread of having a VPC that you back up every few days.

Thanks,
Andrew
