What I want to do is: I want a drop down box to list downloads (name of download) which they can select, when they have selected the one they want click a download now button.

and then for a box to appear, prompting them to open or save the file, its just that if you point to a word doc on the server then it will just open in word, rather that prompt to download it - I want the opposite.

What would be the best method? ie - easy for a learner?

Is this too much for a learner?

Help!

Hi

The problem that you have here is that the document type for Word files is decided by the client machine - so there is nothing we can do about it. If they recognize the file as a valid application type then their computer will try to open it. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

However, if you turn your downloads into compressed Zip files (which take less time to download anyway) then the save as dialogue box will always come up. This is an amicable solution all round.

As far as creating the dropdown goes, use the Insert > form objects > Jump menu to add your list (make sure that you tick the "go" button" bit. Then populate it with your list of downloads. When they choose their file and press go it will prompt the "save as" dialogue. Derren

Hi John,

Version 2.5 of Microsoft's Data Access Components introduced ADODB.Stream which allows you to open a binary file and send the data to the browser, thus forcing a download as opposed to opening the file within the browser, quite good when you want to download a gif or jpg file (or in your case a Word document).

Also gives you the code to do it, what a guy!

Hope this helps.

BTW, if this doesn't work go with one of the others' suggestions, zipping it is probably easier.
